If the shaytan is chained up in Ramadan, why am I struggling?

Ramadan is a month that brings immense blessings, mercy, and divine protection. For many who suffer from spiritual afflictions, the hope is that the devils (shayateen) will be chained, and the suffering will cease. However, some find that their afflictions persist or even intensify during this blessed month, which raises a significant question: If the devils are chained, why do spiritual attacks continue?

This blog seeks to offer insight into this question, addressing the complexities of spiritual afflictions during Ramadan, backed by authentic Islamic teachings and scholarly perspectives.

Understanding the Hadith: “The Devils Are Chained”

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explained to us the unique nature of Ramadan:

“When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed, and the devils are chained.” (Bukhari 1899, Muslim 1079)

This hadith is authentic and widely known. However, it is important to understand its deeper meanings. Scholars have shed light on several points regarding this:

  1. Not all devils are chained: Some scholars, including Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Hajar, have explained that while the major devils (maradat al-shayateen) are chained, the lesser devils and jinn still have the ability to influence.
  2. Partial weakening of influence: Imam An-Nawawi clarifies that the chaining of devils refers to their weakened influence, but not their complete removal from human affairs.
  3. A spiritual environment of protection: Ibn Taymiyyah beautifully suggests that the atmosphere created by fasting, prayer, and the recitation of the Quran significantly weakens the power of devils, making it harder for them to afflict believers.
Why Do Some People Still Suffer in Ramadan?

Despite the devils being chained, some people still experience heightened spiritual afflictions. Here are some reasons why:

  • Residual effects of previous afflictions: If a person has already been affected by sihr (black magic) or jinn possession, these afflictions can continue even if the devils are chained.
  • The jinn inside the person are not chained: The devils might be chained, but if a jinn has already taken possession of the person, it remains active as it resides within their body.
  • Increased spiritual resistance: Some devils and jinn, despite being weakened, may resist the change brought on by Ramadan and attempt to intensify their influence as a last effort to cause harm.
  • Spiritual vulnerabilities: Personal weaknesses, sins, and a lack of spiritual vigilance can strengthen the influence of any remaining devils, making it harder to experience the relief one expects.
Why Do Some Find Relief in Ramadan?

While some struggle, many others experience immense relief and ease from their afflictions during Ramadan. The reasons are deeply spiritual:

  • An environment of mercy and protection: The mercy and blessings of Ramadan, combined with the collective acts of worship, create an atmosphere where the influence of devils is reduced, leading to spiritual peace and protection.
  • Increased acts of worship: The heightened acts of worship—especially the recitation of the Quran and extra prayers—serve as a powerful shield against spiritual harm.
  • The mercy of Allah: For those who turn to Allah with sincerity, seeking His mercy and forgiveness, Allah grants them relief, regardless of the afflictions they may face.
How to Strengthen Your Protection in Ramadan

To fully benefit from the spiritual atmosphere of Ramadan and protect yourself from afflictions, here are some steps you can take:

  • Regular Ruqyah: Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat-ul-Kursi, and Surah Al-Falaq and An-Nas regularly, especially in the morning and evening.
  • Avoid sins: Ramadan is the best time to avoid sins, which weaken faith and open the door for spiritual disturbances.
  • Repentance (Tawbah): The act of repentance cleanses the soul and removes barriers between you and Allah’s help.
  • Night prayers (Qiyam): The night prayers (Tahajjud) during Ramadan are particularly powerful in repelling the influence of devils.
  • Recite and listen to the Quran: The Quran is a source of healing. Engaging with it regularly brings peace and protection.
Conclusion: Embrace the Blessings of Ramadan

While the chaining of the devils in Ramadan weakens their influence, the persistence of afflictions is often due to residual spiritual disturbances, personal vulnerabilities, or past spiritual attacks. However, this does not mean there is no relief. Ramadan is a time of immense mercy, forgiveness, and spiritual healing, and it provides the best opportunity to strengthen your connection with Allah, engage in acts of worship, and seek protection from afflictions.
